Shutter skills

I’ve been working on my food photography…. what do you guys think?

The biscuit recipe can be seen here.

I’ve been borrowing an SLR camera (a Canon) and taking a photography class. I feel a little more legit! Of course I almost dropped the camera and fogged it up with steam trying to shoot those potatoes frying, but hey, it’s an improvement.

I’m totally stoked to see Joy The Baker next week. I’m making the trip to Portland to have her sign my book. What should I bring her?? I’m thinking…. homemade mustard. Or cookies. Either one. Anyways, enjoy this food porn in the meantime, and maybe next week I can post a photo of me and Joy 🙂

  1. The biscuits and the cooked food all look yummy. I think food photography must be hard because half the time I see photos of dishes it doesn’t make me hungry, but yours did. There’s gotta be tricks. Like in a magazine your coffee or tea would actually look hot and steamy somehow.
    Good job.

  2. Thank you! It is harder then it looks! In actuality my cat was running around meowing at me and I had every light turned on in the house! Lighting is important, and props… The biscuit shot took longer to set up then to photograph I think! Those are Yogurt Biscuits from the cookbook Super Natural Every Day by Heidi Swanson. I can post the recipe for you…. they are kinda tangy because there is plain Greek yogurt in them, a little like a sourdough biscuit. Impossible not to eat one right out of the oven, but delicious the next day with marmalade.

  3. I wouldn’t bring her anything because it’ll just get thrown away. She’ll think she’s being poisoned by a crazy fan and won’t eat it.

    • Really? I listen to her podcast (food nerd, i know) and she said she loved the stuff people brought her. I only considered it because other people did it, before that I honestly didn’t even think about it.

  4. You are so right about the lighting in food photography (actually any type of photography), but rarely does food look good with front lighting only. You’ve done a beautiful job here. Your blog is beautiful.
